Contrada Spinagallo – Maeggio – Perciata is a large area that extends to the sides of the provincial road SP 12 (Strada Spinagallo) in the province of Syracuse which leads from Cassibile to Floridia.
The area of interest is the Grotta Monello Integral Nature Reserve, a protected natural area established in 1998 by the Sicilian Region’s Territory and Environment Department.
It covers about 60 hectares and is located in the eastern part of the Hyblean plateau in the province of Syracuse, 7 kilometres from Cassibile.
The reserve was established with the aim of protecting the exceptional development of stalactites and stalagmites and the rich cave fauna.
The Cave, arranged on several levels, has an overall development of about 540 m and is very rich in calcareous concretions such as stalactites and stalagmites, of the most varied forms.
The boundaries of the reserve coincide with those of the Site of Community Interest Grotta Monello and include, in addition to the aforementioned cave, the area that extends west to the valley of the Moscasanti stream and the adjacent abandoned stone quarry, north to the Spinagallo road, south to the Perciata cave, while to the east it includes several agricultural land.
The reserve is located in the eastern sector and consists of an area that is very varied from a landscape point of view: steep river valleys, called “quarries”, which alternate with flat stony areas where there are various forms of superficial karst.
The most representative crops are olive groves, almond groves, carob groves and in this context there are acanthus and yellow chrysanthemum.
Another point of interest in this area is the Mediterranean Hippodrome.
It was opened on December 8, 1995 and famous jockeys such as: Lester Piggot, Willie Carson and John Riddle, icons of world horse racing, flocked for the occasion.
The racecourse stands on an area that includes 55 hectares of land at the foot of the Hyblean Plateau, near Cassibile (Syracuse).
The slopes are very versatile, reaching excellent quality standards, to the point of being ranked among the best in Europe.
The racecourse consists of two grass gallop tracks, with an average width of approximately 30 m; from a gallop track in sand, with an average width of 20 m; a trot track in sand, with a transversal width of 20 m; from a grass track for racing and flat training at a gallop and possibly also with obstacles; from a gallop track for training in sand, 6 m wide.
