Location Description:
Capo Murro di Porco is a southeastern point in the southeastern part of Sicily that is located in the Syracuse municipality, more precisely on the Maddalena peninsula. The most extreme part is bordered by a lighthouse.
It stands on a high cliff overlooking the sea that offers a picturesque view of the gulf below, where a unique and evocative phenomenon takes place, namely, sprays of water very similar to Icelandic geysers that come out of “potholes,” that is, cracks created on the rock with the continuous infiltration of sea water.
The part of the sea in front of Capo Murro di Porco is part of the Plemmirio marine protected area, while the most extreme part is included in the territory of the future Capo Murro di Porco and Maddalena Peninsula Oriented Nature Reserve.
The diving interest is given by the presence of the numerous caves carved by the course of time in the white, calcareous bare rock. They with spectacular scenery and with their numerous residents (solitary corals, sponges, sea cicadas, nudibranchs and many species of fish), make diving even more suggestive and magical.
In the depths live the largest shells in the Mediterranean, but also colonial corals and some large groupers.
From Capo Murro di Porco, dominated by a lighthouse, annual observations are held of large pelagic fish such as tuna, amberjacks, and of marine mammals such as dolphins, whales, and sperm whales.
But what is most impressive about this magnificent place is certainly this “scornful” encounter between the high cliffs of the peninsula and the sea, with the coast alternating between low, high and jagged.
In the latter type of coastline a series of very important caves have developed, due to sea abrasion, within which there are characteristic micro-environments.
Among all of them we underline the Pellegrina Cave, within which it is possible to observe constructions of stalactites and stalagmites.
The houses that surround the area, are mainly great villas of particular value, facing the sea or with a sea view, surrounded by luxuriant cultivated gardens with trees and plants, many are residential houses, where families live all year round, considering the proximity to the city of Syracuse.
In the summer, some of these beautiful villas are given on tourist leases to Italian and foreign vacationers who come to vacation in this area every year.
